Look who's on top

The USA Today released their preseason college football poll in the wee hours of the morning, and too what will probably lead to much controversy, Ohio State was picked as the #1 team in the nation. Of course, someone out there had to bring up Maurice Clarett and Jim O'Brien (you know, since he's SO involved with our football team) when talking about our preseason ranking (Much thanks to BuckeyeCommentary). The rest of the top 25 can be seen here.

The battle for this trophy just began.

Now, as I'm sure everyone knows by now: this sets up a Week 2 battle of the top two teams in the nation In Austin Texas on September 9. In this game we are going to learn a whole heck of a lot about both teams, mainly, "How good can Ohio State's defense be?" and "Who the hell is Colt McCoy?" But until then, there isn't a whole lot to talk about that hasn't already been pounded into the ground numerous times.

Now, I think I'll address the issue of Ohio State being number 1. Of course, there will be naysayers out there arguing against the lack of experience on defense, and they have every right to make that argument, because it is a valid point. However, I think people need to be reminded that there is no USC or Miami this year (as in, a team that appears to be leaps and bounds above everyone else), and that if we're going to continue to do these preseason polls, that somebody out there has to be #1. Every team in the nation has glaring holes. Texas has no quarterback, USC has no Leinart, Bush, Bing, or White, and Notre Dame really just isn't as good as everyone seems to think. I think this is just a matter of the coaches who voted us #1 because they obviously have the most faith that we'll be able to find a solution to our problems the easiest.

Although I don't really like having the bullseye on us all season long, and I think that that could hurt us in the end, it's always a lot better to be overrated than underrated (just ask Auburn).
